According to a recent report by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average airfare in Nigeria for domestic flights rose significantly in August 2024. The cost of air travel for a single journey reached ₦123,700, marking a 25.51% increase compared to ₦98,560 in July 2024. This rise in airfares reflects ongoing inflationary pressures and operational cost increases faced by airlines. On a year-on-year basis, the airfare surged by 56.56%, up from ₦79,011 in August 2024.
While air travel saw sharp fare hikes, other transport categories experienced mixed trends. For instance, city bus fares decreased by 7.77% in August compared to July, while intercity bus fares increased slightly.
