Just days before the release of the four-hour Life Documentary, the 59-year-old American journalist and author was diagnosed with a progressive and degenerative mental frontotemporal disease.
But on Saturday night, the doctor’s diagnosis was enough to explain Williams’ often irrational and erratic behavior that left him sleeping in bed day after day and then criticizing staff and family members for minor infractions.
Documents move from one attack to the next; Williams’ staff, including his manager, personal assistant and driver, as well as members of his household, are subjected to negative comments and insults from a popular TV personality.
Sometimes things just happen for Williams, and when she has a moment of realization, a realization that maybe she won’t be well received on television in America, she gets confrontational, speaks badly, then bursts into tears. In the same way.
But clearly something is wrong. In one of the most shocking events of the documentary, which tells about his struggle with alcoholism and health in recent years, Williams met his director Will Selby, and Selby asked him why there was a bottle of vodka next to the bed. ‘So do you have anything to eat or a liquid lunch? Because I walked into your room and suddenly I saw one of your signature items. Did you finish your entire glass of wine today? Selby asked. “Yes,” Williams replied, then immediately said “no.” “I don’t know if you want that right now,” Selby continued confidently. “I’m not drunk!” Williams protested. “I’m not saying he was drunk, but I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Selby continued. “So you think it’s totally okay for you to drink as much as you want?” “Great,” Williams repeated. “Fuck you!” I’ll put it down to cool it down,” said Selby. ‘There! Williams asked, making sure he could see the wine. ‘I don’t know how much you drank, but I threw the wine away. I’m being honest with you. I don’t know how you’re going to stop this,” Selby said directly to the camera after the meeting. I’d be lying to you if I thought I could handle alcohol on my own. Williams was asked if he planned to quit smoking. “No,” Williams replied. Will [Selby] drink? We all drink. Why can’t I? he said, justifying his stance. The film presented a major opportunity for career success for Williams, who was preparing to launch her podcast shortly after the cancellation of The Wendy Williams Show, which ran from 2008 to 2022. Instead, the film explores his struggle with alcoholism, leading to depression and confusion about the world around him. Williams seemed less able to answer producers’ questions, often breaking down in tears about his alcoholism and financial concerns.
