Driver Arrested for Stealing Employer’s Laptop, Abandoning Car in Ikeja

Kelechi Jeffrey, a 30-year-old driver, has been taken into custody by the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for allegedly stealing his employer’s laptop and abandoning her car in Ikeja. He was apprehended on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Ikorodu after an investigation by RRS officers.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 22. Kelechi, who had been hired on August 21, 2024, drove his employer to her office. However, instead of staying with the vehicle, he left it parked with the keys in the Alausa Central Business District area of Ikeja and fled with her HP EliteBook laptop, which contained important personal and work-related information.

After the theft, Kelechi allegedly sold the laptop at Computer Village, Ikeja, for N120,000. He then demanded a N100,000 ransom from his employer, pretending he would return the device. Once the money was transferred, he switched off his phone and became unreachable.

RRS officers recovered the laptop from the buyer in Computer Village on Monday, October 28, although it had already been formatted. CSP Shola Jejeloye, the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, has confirmed that Kelechi will face prosecution in court.
