Idumota Fire: Unapproved Buildings’ll Be Demolished,Sanwo-Olu says

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday visited the scene of fire at the popular Idumota market in the state. The Governor, together with some state officials, evaluated the damage caused by the fire and said that the buildings in the public market would be demolished.

He said business in the sector is still suspended until further notice. The affected areas include Dosunmu, Nnamdi Azikwe, Moshalashi, Woro Pedro and Obanikoro. The others are Ago Tawa, Idumagbo Avenue, Idumagbo, Ido-Oluwo and Oju Olobun.

 fire incident engulfed a section of the Idumota Market in the area on Tuesday.

The fire, which started in the early hours of Tuesday, brought down two buildings and affected many others, even as goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.

The governor said the fire was as a result of mishandling flammable materials. “We have initiated a full investigation to determine the cause and implement stricter safety protocols,” he said.

“I am disappointed that buildings have been turned into hazardous materials. This practice allows fires to go out quickly and must be stopped. We will arrest those who criticize our buildings and safety standards. ” When we met face to face with victims and stakeholders, we talked about immediate and long-term support in cooperation.

Integrity standards are now subject to integrity testing and Dosunmu Market will be closed until it can ensure security and compliance with all standards. Unapproved buildings will be demolished. We cannot see the life safety of our citizens.”
