The communique stated that the choice to halt the protest midway was made during its National Executive Council meeting, as the union believed the objectives of the demonstration were accomplished on the initial day.
Large groups of protesters flooded the streets of Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and various other cities, urging the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian Government to promptly intervene and alleviate the hardships experienced by citizens. The demonstration also expresses discontent with the government’s purported neglect in implementing agreements made on October 2, 2023, subsequent to the removal of the fuel subsidy.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership has halted the ongoing two-day nationwide protest against hardship and rising inflation. In a communique released on Tuesday evening, the NLC declared a new ultimatum, extending it until March 13, 2024, for the Nigerian Government to fulfill its promises to the union. The decision to suspend the protest midway was reached during the National Executive Council meeting, as the union deemed the objectives achieved on the first day of the demonstration. NLC’s Head of Information, Comrade Benson Upah, mentioned that a press conference is scheduled for noon tomorrow (Wednesday) to address the public on the issues.
