A tragic ambush in Delta State has claimed the lives of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and several other individuals during an early morning rescue mission. Another DPO is reported to be in critical condition, receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital after sustaining severe injuries.
The incident, which highlights the risks faced by law enforcement, was shared by Delta State human rights activist Comrade Israel Joe in a Facebook post. He expressed deep sorrow over the attack and commended the officers’ commitment to their duty.
According to the report, the ambush took place near Agbarho Rail Station, as officers were on a mission to rescue a kidnap victim. A gunfight ensued, leading to the deaths of the newly appointed DPO of Agbarho, who had only been in office for two days, as well as several other officers. The DPO of Orerokpe, identified as CSP Paul, was among those severely wounded and is currently battling for his life in the hospital.
Comrade Joe shared his grief: “This is a huge loss for the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police Force. Just yesterday, I spoke with the new DPO regarding the conduct of his officers, and he took immediate action, addressing the matter with integrity. His loss is deeply painful.”
He extended his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and called for justice, insisting that none of the criminals responsible for the attack should go unpunished.
Attempts to contact the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, for further comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The situation remains under investigation.
