Alabama recently unveiled its inaugural Safe Haven baby box at the Madison Fire and Rescue Department in Madison County. To date, three infants have been left in this specific baby box, which is the only one out of the four in the state that has been utilized. Baby boxes serve as a testament to a state’s Safe Haven laws and aid in educating the community about available options. These designated locations offer a secure space for mothers to leave their infants if they are unable to care for them. It’s worth noting that all states have Safe Haven laws, with 20 states currently permitting the use of baby boxes, 15 of which have already implemented them.
In 2023, Alabama updated its Safe Haven Law to incorporate baby boxes on the outer walls of hospitals and fire stations. These locations have staff available 24/7. When a baby is placed in the box, an alarm alerts medics. The baby box in Alabama is equipped with an internal camera. After a baby is left in the baby box, medics promptly check on the infant and then transfer them to a hospital for further care. Subsequently, the Alabama Department of Human Resources ensures the baby receives care through child protective services.
